The documentary Missing Piece follows the stories of residents impacted by eviction from Toronto’s community housing and the devastating human consequences that can follow when housing systems fail the people who depend on them.

Among those featured are Susie and Reem, who were evicted from the home they had shared for twenty-two years. It took officers just fifteen minutes to remove them.

Their experience is not an isolated one.

Across Toronto, tenants face housing insecurity, displacement, and eviction while navigating systems that can be difficult to understand and even harder to challenge. Behind every eviction notice is a person, a family, and a story. The consequences can extend far beyond housing, affecting people’s health, wellbeing, relationships, and sense of belonging.

These are the people I have chosen to stand alongside.

My approach to housing advocacy is rooted in the belief that communities deserve more than someone who speaks about them. They deserve people who will listen to them, stand with them, and help ensure their experiences are heard.

For me, housing is not an abstract policy issue. It is about whether a person living with serious health challenges can remain safely housed. It is about whether a family can continue living in the community they have called home for decades. It is about whether tenants facing powerful institutions have someone willing to stand in their corner.

This is what it means to show up, not only during an election, but when people need someone in their corner.
